Executive Director Dan Egan Steps Down

Dan Egan, the Executive Director of Feeding New York State, will be stepping down after more than six years of transformative leadership.

Dan joined Feeding New York State in March 2019, when the organization was operating with just 1.5 staff members (counting Dan) and limited resources. Today, thanks to his vision and tireless leadership, Feeding NYS enters Fiscal Year 2026 with a $4.2 million budget, a staff of 10, and national recognition for its impact and integrity. Programs like Nourish New York—a $55 million permanent initiative Egan personally conceived, advocated for, and helped launch—have become vital tools in connecting New York’s farmers with families in need.

Dan also spearheaded successful campaigns that increased state support for hunger relief by hundreds of millions of dollars. These included a 60% increase in HPNAP support, groundbreaking DEC-funded food recovery programs, and a leading role in the coalition that created universal school meals in New York State. Through it all, Feeding NYS has remained fiscally sound and programmatically bold, earning the admiration of colleagues across the nation as a “gold standard” in hunger advocacy.

Dan’s passion for justice has been lifelong. A sociologist by training, an Army National Guard infantry officer by service, and a political activist at heart—his college radio show in the 1980s was called Rock Against Reaganomics—he brought to Feeding NYS a rare blend of moral conviction, strategic thinking, and deep respect for community. He has also served on the Albany City School Board and is a father of five and grandfather of four.

“The Feeding New York State team are the best people I have ever worked with. Together we have been able to accomplish a lot for our neighbors in need. There is so much more to do, and our team will continue the great work”.

Dan will remain in his position until August 1 to assist with the leadership transition. A search for a new Executive Director is underway.
