Feeding New York State (FNYS) leads a unified effort for a hunger-free New York State. We work to end hunger by supporting the ten food banks of New York State: managing statewide grants; sourcing food for our food banks; fostering relationships with government at all levels; partnering with other anti-hunger organizations to ensure every community in New York State has access to good, healthy food; educating the public on hunger issues; and researching and sharing best practices among food banks. Feeding NYS coordinates a statewide advocacy effort, teaming with advocacy staff at our ten food bank members to create a unified voice. Advocacy efforts are designed to influence public policy at the State and Federal levels. We engage on issues related to the root causes of hunger as well as on funding for anti-hunger programs. We partner with colleague organizations in the anti-hunger space to strengthen our impact. We create opportunities for those with lived experience to be heard in the public arena. We work towards the creation of a movement to end food insecurity. The Advocacy Coordinator is the lead staff responsible for field organizing as the key part of our mass engagement strategy. Working with the Executive Director and Advocacy Manager, the Advocacy Coordinator assists in the development of the mass engagement strategy, develops and assesses tactics, and executes the field organizing and canvassing elements of a movement to end food insecurity. The Advocacy Coordinator works in a team environment comprised of representatives from ten Feeding NYS food banks (the Advocacy Committee); the Advocacy Coordinator also works in a small team environment in our Albany office. The Advocacy Coordinator works in partnership with the Advocacy Committee to coordinate and manage the field advocacy work of Feeding New York State. This position reports to the Advocacy Manager. Advocacy Coordinator Job Responsibilities: • In collaboration with Feeding NYS Advocacy Manager and Advocacy Committee members, assist in the development of joint strategic advocacy efforts • Manage and evaluate the mass engagement plan, including development, implementation, evaluation, and data management • Execute canvassing plan • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on federal and state legislation Develop and execute targeted outreach to potential partners; network within the advocacy community; act as spokesperson for Feeding NYS within the community • Contribute to team effort at all times • Develop advocacy-related marketing and outreach materials • Manage own administrative tasks, scheduling, and correspondence • Compile statistical and descriptive information for contract and other reporting requirements • Represent Feeding NYS in a positive, professional manner at all times • Maintain confidentiality of all client, staff, volunteer, and agency information • Demonstrate absolute integrity at all times Work Hours & Benefits: • Full time-40 hours/week Monday-Friday. Occasional evening/weekend hours as needed. • Extensive statewide travel for in-person canvassing, networking, and presentations. Virtual presentations as needed. Heavy travel schedule in January-February, including overnights. • Hybrid work-from-home/work-in-office will be permitted after the probation period is completed • FNYS Laptop provided • Health benefits • Paid major holidays during funded period • Vacation time Education and Experience Requirements: • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Politics, Government, Communications, Public Policy, Social Work/Social Welfare or a related field required. • Minimum two years experience in advocacy, policy development, campaign management, or community outreach • Track record in electoral or issue campaigns (volunteer work will be counted) including canvassing work • Knowledge of NY State and Federal government • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Excellent public speaking skills • Initiative, Integrity, and Judgment • Knowledge of appropriate software including Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint • Attention to detail • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and current documented automobile insurance • Ability to work in a peer-oriented team This description reflects the principal functions of the job for the purpose of job evaluation.
